Silly Songs with Micah

I thought I’d share a couple silly songs that Micah has made up in recent times.  In case you didn’t know, Micah LOVES to sing.  When he is happy, he bursts out in song – usually falsetto.  LOL.

The first silly song that I can recall – and by silly song, I mean Micah singing his own rendition of the song – was his his take on “The Farmer in the Dell”.  Israel’s mom bought the boys almost every Cedarmont Kids DVD and the boys love watching and singing along.  On the “Pre-School Songs” DVD is where Micah learned this song.  It ends with “The cheese stands alone…the cheese stands alone….hi-ho-the-dario the cheese stands alone.”  Well, I was sitting in the house with Micah and we were petting Chance, our orange cat.  Now, this was a rare occurrence since Chance is still a bit wary of Micah.  Anyway, Micah was so happy to be able to pet Chance that he starting singing,

“Chance stands alone!  Chance stands alone!
Hi-ho-the-dario…Chance stands alone!”

I could not contain my laughter.

Today, he made up a song about his “puppy-jamas”.  Let me explain.  Micah has a favorite outfit and that is his pajamas with brown puppies on them.  From the time he got them, he loved wearing them because he loves puppies.  He affectionately calls them his “puppy-jamas”.  Well, today as I was changing him out of his PJs to his regular clothes, he starting singing this song: (sung to the tune of the first line of “Sabbath is a Happy Day!)

“Puppy-Jama – Happy day!  Happy Day!  Happy Day!
Puppy-Jama – Happy day!  Happy Day!  Happy Day!”

Here’s Micah wearing the bottoms of his “puppy-jamas”.

Micah sings a variety of songs ranging from “Mercy Said No” to “Happy Birthday”.  However, his all-time favorite song for the last several months has been “Only A Boy Named David”.  He requests this song every worship – morning & evening – and he sings it at least a dozen times in between.  Sometimes he sings it in a silly-hyper way and other times, he goes all out and tries to sing operatically.  I’m still trying to get that version on video.  I think his love for this song is partly what inspires him to always carry a rock or small ball in his hand almost at all times and especially if we are going out somewhere.  If he doesn’t have one, he’ll come up to me and say, “Mama, hold it…rock”  or “Mama, hold it…ball” with his hand outstretched.

*sigh*  These are things I never want to forget…for they will always bring a smile to my face.

Perhaps God has great plans for Micah to be a composer or singer.  But for now, we all know one thing is for sure…he is a ham!  He never fails to bring joy and laughter to our family.

I read this yesterday morning from the book “Child Guidance” on page 205.

“Marked diversities of disposition and character frequently exist in the same family, for it is in the order of God that persons of varied temperament should associate together.  When this is the case, each member of the household should sacredly regard the feelings and respect the right of the others.  By this means mutual consideration and forbearance will be cultivated, prejudices will be softened, and rough points of character smoothed.  Harmony may be secured, and the blending of the varied temperaments may be a benefit to each.”  Taken from the chapter titled, Study Age, Disposition, and Temperament.

We’ve always referred to Imanuel as our sweet boy.  He cares about the feelings of others and will always defend the underdog.  He is affectionate and sensitive.

Micah is our silly boy.  He is our independent one who is often in his own world.  He enjoys making people laugh, but is focused on his wants/goals much more so than those of others.

The other night, Israel and I were talking about our kids and wondering what our third boy will be like.  It’s hard to imagine, but it’s always comforting to know that each child that comes into our lives is predestined by God to be a perfect match for our family.  There is strength in diversity.

By God’s grace, it is our hope and prayer that we will all help each other become the people God wants us to be.  We are not placed in families or connected to friends by chance.  However different we may be, God allows us to cross paths to bring forbearance, mutual consideration, and to smooth our characters.  This will ultimately bring true unity!  Let’s be thankful for each one who is a part of our lives.  I couldn’t be more thankful for each member of my family.

A Morning to Remember

In the morning, Micah had been whining quietly for some time.  He wasn’t in a good mood.  Usually we are summoned by a cheerful, “MAMA!  MAAAAAAAAAMA!”  This morning, it was a series of whimpers and cries.  Yeah, there were a few “mamas” here and there, but he seemed so grumpy that I was hesitant to let him out thinking he may fall back asleep.  I waited a while and then I decided to go get him.  I knocked and he answered with a weak, “COME IN!”

As I entered, there was a horrible stench.  He obviously had a messy diaper.  As I neared Micah’s crib, he was in the corner of his crib sitting down.  Usually he is standing and waiting for me to get him.  Then I noticed that there were stains all over his sheets and blanket.  Then I realize that it is brown.  Then I realize that there is brown stuff COVERING both hands, his clothes, and part of his face & hair.  I’m not even exaggerating, it looked like he had just played in a big, gloppy mud pile.  There was poop everywhere.  The sheer quantity of it all was outrageous.  I was beyond myself.  I was in shock.  I’m surprised I didn’t go into labor right then and there.

I yelled to Israel for back-up.  I was afraid he had ingested some too.  I told Israel to take off his clothes as I ran off to started the bath water.  After stripping our poor child down, I stood him in the tub and began rinsing him off.  It took about 15 minutes to remove all of the brown stuff from his whole body.  Then, I plugged the tub and had him sit down for a bubble bath.  (Their bubble bath is scented like grapefruit so it helped the overall smell of the bathroom while at the same time, lifting his spirits.)  In the meantime, Israel hand-scrubbed the poopie clothes, blankets, sheets, and mattress protector and then threw them in the washer for a pre-wash, wash, and then extra rinse.

The most pathetic part of the whole ordeal was that while I was washing him off with the warm water, he kept saying in between whimpers, “Thank you, Mama…thank you.”  The poor boy – I wish I would have gotten him sooner.

The moral of this story is to never feed Micah homemade soup – complete with squash, corn, carrots, potatoes, tomatoes, cabbage, and vegetable “mandoo” – for lunch AND dinner with grapefruit for dessert.  I don’t know why we didn’t see it coming.  This was the worst disaster ever.  It beats the Eucerin episode by a landslide.

A Rough Week for Micah

This week, Micah has gone through so much.  I feel so sorry for him.  I will not go into details, but he had a very traumatic experience, he’s had to go to the hospital twice, he’s on antibiotics, he had to get a lead/iron test and 6 vaccines (in the same visit – 1 on each arm and 2 on each thigh), he has diarrhea (-I think from the medication), and this all happened without his daddy and brother around.  Lucky me.

I felt so sorry for him on the way home from his doctor’s appointment today so I took him out to eat at Quiznos.  I thought I’d officially make it a “first date” tradition.  (I wrote a post on my first date with Manu way back before Micah was born.  It was actually at about the same age.  We went to Quiznos.)  It was nice.  He only wanted to eat the Baked Lays and the cookie…oh, and lots of juice.  He was so giddy off of the raspberry lemonade that he would just look at the other customers and giggle.  Anyway, he just looks so pathetic.  But he is holding up strong.

We have one bit of good news.  His height percentile has surpassed his weight percentile!  He is no longer “overweight”!  🙂  His height is 75% and weight is 60%.  I think walking has really slimmed him down.  Yay for Micah!!

He is starting to talk a lot more and really express himself.  His fav sentence by far is “More, Mama.”  He’ll repeat this over and over to anyone who has something he wants.  Well, he’s obviously talking to me, but he wants me to give him whatever that person has.  He likes to pretend he’s talking on the phone (with any object that he can put to his ear).  He’ll babble and then say, “Buh-Bye!”  He enjoys telling Bentley “No” or “Down” when he is trying to steal his food.  Then he gives in and feeds him some anyway.  Oh, and his new favorite instrument during Sabbath worship is the kazoo.  With Micah on the kazoo and Manu on the harmonica, worships can get quite lively…with me singing solo.  It’s lots of fun, though.  Micah is super-silly.  We thought Manu was silly…but Micah far surpasses him, particularly with is cheesy laugh and fake babble.  And of course, he is a monkey and copies everything his brother does.

As I speak, Israel, Manu and Uncle Daniel are on their way home from the CAMPUS year-end meeting.  It has been 3 days since they left us.  Micah and I have truly bonded these past few days.  I’m thankful for the quality time we were able to have together.  I’m also glad that the Lord watched over us and kept us safe.  He always seems to give me strength in due season.  Well, the weather is warming up and in a funny way, I feel as though a new chapter of our lives is beginning.  At the same time, I feel like I have no idea what I’m writing about.  Anyway, that’s all I want to share.  I think I need a nap…

Micah after I buzzed his hair for the first time.  🙂

Micah’s Cracker Binge

This morning, Micah called us surprisingly early.  The boys have gotten into a routine where after one wakes up, they wake up their brother and play together for around half an hour.  Then after a while, Micah starts getting thirsty/hungry and so he calls for me.  Very similar to how it was with Imanuel:
“mama…maaaa-ma…Maa-Ma….MAAAA MA!”

Well, this morning, it started off a little differently.  It was about 8:00am (-and since we haven’t adjusted yet to daylight savings, it really was 7:00am – they usually wake up at 8:30am which would now be 9:30am).  I heard movement in their room a little earlier, but not much talking.  Then, for the first time in history, Micah called “da-da….da-da…da-da”  And after about 5 minutes with no response, he finally resorted to “ma-ma”.  I went in there with a cup of soymilk.

I handed him the cup and he started gulping down very rapidly.  And that’s when I saw the crackers.  A bag of Kashi TLC crackers were emptied into Micah’s crib and he had eaten them all except for a few that were under his blankets.  There were crumbs everywhere!  That’s when I remember the box being up on the drawers next to Micah’s crib.  He must have manuevered his stuffed animals to bring the box closer within reach.  Imanuel was still in bed sucking his thumb so I knew he wasn’t the cuprit.

Needless to say, Micah was thirsty.  Very thirsty.  After drinking that cup of soymilk, he continued on to drink 2 more cups of water.

*MORAL of the STORY*:  Don’t leave food unattended within Micah’s reach.  He will eat it…all!

Last time I weighed him on our scale, he was pushing 28lbs.  He is such a big eater that this morning Israel and I both agreed that Micah may eat more than Imanuel.  The good news is that Micah is beginning to walk more and more.  He took close to 8 steps this morning to Israel.  This means soon he will be able to run around and burn off those extra calories!  🙂

He is also beginning to talk more.  Here are some new words/phrases:
– “I love youuuu”
– “Gracias”
– “De nada”
– “Mas”
– “Thank you”
– “Please” – (sign)
– “ka-ka” (crackers)
– “down” (spoken to Bentley at the dinner table)

He loves to talk to the pets…in a very high pitch voice:
– “Awww….puppers!” (talking to Bentley)
– “Awww…..Aroe!” (talking to both cats)

He is turning into quite a silly boy too (-like Imanuel).  Micah has his serious moments still, but he now tries to do funny things to make us laugh!  He really has a sense of humor at such a young age.  He has a little stubborn side too (which has been an object of prayer), but I’m glad that Imanuel has been so patient and easy-going about it.  That has helped to minimize conflict between the two of them.

More recently I’ve witnessed the both of them playing little games together (initiated by Imanuel).  Usually Imanuel is pretending to be a shepherd with a staff, Micah is his sheep (since he crawls around already) and he follows Imanuel around.  Actually, Imanuel does a lot of trying to get his lamb to follow him too.  But that game can sometimes get dangerous when a robber wolf* “appears” and Imanuel finds it his duty to use his “staff” to “wack and thwack the robber wolf” to scare it away and protect his little lamb.  Othertimes, Imanuel crawls with Micah and they are both wolves, or dogs, or cows etc. etc.  And they just romp around the house together and make each other laugh by doing silly things.

*From My Bible Friends, “Jabel the Shepherd”.

The boys are growing up too fast.  Their personalities are so different (-almost opposite) that I hope this helps them become best friends as opposed to competitive rivals.  I’m finding that I need Jesus to help me be more patient and to also refocus my life to be in tune with His.  As this world becomes more and more secular and indifferent to spiritual things, I want my sons to be different;  to be solid and bold in the Word;  to binge on the Bread of Life and then quench their thirst on the Water of Life.  And the only way that can happen is if it starts with me.  What a miracle it would take for all of us to make it to the Kingdom.  And Praise the Lord, Jesus was and is that Miracle.

Two “Firsts” for Micah

This weekend was quite eventful.  Micah’s 5th tooth emerged from his upper gums, we went to church, came home, Israel left to go downstate for a meeting on Sunday, students came over to watch “Gifted Hands” and I’ve been chilling with the boys.  Israel comes back tomorrow so I’ve been doing all I can to take advantage of his absence – throwing a party, doing things to the boys that I’ve always wanted to do (ie. cut Micah’s hair!!)…umm….

Pictures were taken before Daddy left for the airport yesterday.

We miss you, Daddy!

The first “first” was last night when for supper I decided to sort of initiate Micah into Adventist lifestyle and diet.

His very first popcorn & smoothie dinner.

Later that evening, I had the students over for more popcorn and we watched “Gifted Hands”.  The kids went to bed, but at least they got to eat the popcorn!  😀

This picture was taken this morning.

In the afternoon, I gave the boys a bath.  That is one of their favorite things to do.

Micah and his beautiful Mexican skin.

Soaking in some sun before…

I did this while Israel was away in Lansing for a meeting.  Hope he doesn’t find out!  🙂

After.

It wasn’t the most even job, but I did my best.

Also, I made a few mental notes: 1)  Don’t try to use food as a distraction for child to hold still.  I’m sure Micah ingested quite a few hairs along with the tortilla chips.  2)  Don’t give the bath before the cut, save it for after…or you’ll end up doing it twice, like me.

So, what do you all think?

Our New Wood Stove, the Snow, and the Boys

For the past couple of weeks now, we have been using our “new” wood stove to heat our house. Propane has been ridiculously expensive and so we’re trying this alternative method. It’s been great so far. It will definitely be considered one of our best buys for the year. Costing only $15 for the used oil can and $150 for the starter kit, it is the cheapest wood stove you can get. It probably doesn’t score too high on its safety ratings, but with our trusty smoke & carbon monoxide detector-in-one, and with the Lord on our side, we aren’t too worried.  It may look ghetto, but it keeps our house a piping 72 degrees when the coals are hot!

If you haven’t noticed, our pets love this room now!

For the past couple of days, it hasn’t stopped snowing:

Today Israel had a District 1 meeting in Marquette, so while Micah was sleeping, I decided to take Manu out to play.  He’s been having some trouble going to bed at their normal bedtime (7pm).  And he’s constantly tempted to wake up Micah to play after he can’t fall asleep.  So, in an effort to help tire him out, I’m trying to keep him more active during the day.  (And we’ve been pushing his bedtime back about an hour.)  Hopefully this new tactic works.

Building snow bricks for our cave…

We started making a snow cave.  (It also doubles as our personal sledding hill.)  When it stops snowing, it’ll probably be twice this size.  I’ll try to get a picture when it’s completed.  This is when we just started.

And lastly, here are the most recent pics of the boys chilling at home.  Micah is now 14 months and in 2 days, Imanuel will be one month shy of 3 years old.

And we especially want to thank Auntie Jen for the singing cow.  Micah wants it pushed over and over and over and over again.  In the second picture, he’s actually asking me to push it.

Micah’s long tresses and lashes.  He hasn’t had a real hair cut yet.

He can stand up and walk along furniture, but his main mode of transportation is still on all fours.

While I encourage sharing, I try as much as possible to ensure that they don’t share their food with our dog.  Sometimes I permit it, but it is usually only when Imanuel asks if he can.  But I find it quite hilarious that both boys can now protect themselves and their food from the snares of Bentley.  Micah still isn’t 100% successful, but he’s getting there.

The boys eating and making sure Bentley keeps his distance.

Imanuel handing a cracker to Micah as Bentley gets into position.

But then Micah stuffs it into his mouth before Bentley snatches it out of his hand.  I rarely have to intervene now.  🙂  But it is a rather stressful way to eat snacks.

Micah is into putting objects into containers.  He’ll crawl around the living room picking up toys and putting them into the laundry basket or toy box.  He kept putting toys into the cracker jar and Imanuel kept taking them out.  LOL.

Micah signing “More” and “Please” – his two favorite words.

Manu smiling for the camera.  For some reason he just loves the full body PJs.

I can honestly say now that things are getting quite challenging and it has everything to do with the cute little boy wearing his “footies” seen above.  Everything prior to this time was a breeze for me (-I realize now in retrospect).  Trying to parent him has become like an experiment where you try to say/do the “right” things to get the desired results but every time you fail and/or mess up, it adds more and more variables.  It can easily lead to feelings of regret, fear, and insecurity.

The older Imanuel gets (-and the longer I am a mother), the more I feel so strongly that God takes such a huge risk to entrust His children to humans.  Or maybe I should say that He has such confidence.  It is rather humbling.  I mean, I would trust very few people to even babysit my kids, let alone raise them.  And they are people who I obviously feel are “better” or at least would do a comparable job as me.  Yet God says to me (and to us) that He trusts so much in the power of His Son’s sacrifice, that He knows that it is possible for me to do the impossible.  He knows I can raise my kids to be fit for this life and for the life to come.  He knows I can overcome myself and be the example He wants me to be for my boys.  Sometimes I don’t feel comfortable with that responsibility.  But, the encouraging news is that the omniscent God knows that it is at least possible.  At times, it takes a lot of faith to believe.

Anyway, to end on a lighter note, I wanted to write down some funny things I want to remember.  Imanuel loves to sing.  One of his up and coming favorite songs is “Read Your Bible, Pray Everyday” which also goes to the same tune as “I Will Make You Fishers of Men”.  He loves both of those songs.  Well, the interesting thing about that tune and both songs is that he cannot seem to get the lyrics right!  Without fail, he always sings,

“Bring your Bible, pray everyday and you’ll grow, grow grow…”

I completely blame this one on Sikhu (by way of Sebastien) because she would always say, “Worship!  Bring your Bibles!”

And another time, he was singing to himself, “I will make you fishers of men…” and when he got to the second verse (Hear Christ calling, “Come unto me, I will give you rest…”) he started singing,

“Hear Christ calling, ‘Come unto me, come unto me, come unto me,
“Hear Christ calling, ‘Come unto me, I will make you sleep’
“I will make you sleep, I will make you sleep…”

Then I began wondering if he even thought that was a good thing or not…

Anyway, everyday, while it brings its challenges, has so many more happy moments that at the end of the day, I feel so very blessed.  I am thoroughly convinced that God desires His children to experience happiness even here on this sinful earth!

Eucerin Mischief and Micah’s Words

So, a couple nights ago, our friends Carol and Jennifer (students at Tech) were chilling with me.  They are still on break and they were able to spend a lot of time at our place (as they live in Kenya).  It has been such a blessing.  Anyway, on Tuesday night, I had put the kids down and we were chatting in the kitchen.

* Imanuel had crept out of his room twice already because he had to “go to the bathroom”.  And I put those words in quotations not because he didn’t HAVE to go, but because he would FORCE himself to go…like 5 drops max.  Unlike his brother, he has never fully recovered from jetlag due to our trip to GYC. *

I soon noticed that the lights to the boys’ room was on.  This has NEVER happened before.  And I was quite frustrated because I knew that Micah would now be awake as well.  I opened the door and immediately Imanuel threw something out of the crib (-he had climbed into Micah’s crib…as his custom has been lately), hid his face in his hands and started crying (- a sign of conviction in this case).  And to my horror, Micah, sporting his normal unassuming look, was covered in white stuff.  All I could utter out of my mouth was, “Oh My Goodness.”  The girls ran into the room and gasped.

I pieced things together.  That day I had bought an $8 jar of Eucerin cream for Micah’s back.  (He has eczema.)  Imanuel must have found it when he decided to switch the lights on.  He was having fun making Micah (and himself) up until I walked in.  (I have a feeling that Imo’s lotion and make-up sessions with me and Uncle Justin inspired him.)  And Micah had no choice but to consent to this.  Both of them remained so quiet the whole time.  Manu had thrown the empty jar on the floor when I walked in.  He found the courage to look up and he too had his hair and face covered with the cream.  It was everywhere – on Micah’s blankets, on their clothes, on the actual crib…etc.

Needless to say, their heads were so creamy and oily we weren’t sure where to start.  The girls got Micah and started a bath for him.  I had a “talk” with Imanuel and then he too got in the tub.  To give Manu some credit, he mentioned that Micah was already awake and that is why he decided to turn on the lights so they could see while they played.  This was stated after my accusation that he woke Micah up by turning on the lights.

Anyhow, no matter how much shampoo was used, their hair remained greasy.  Today, two days after the incident and at least 6 shampoos later, there is still a slight oily film in their hair.  So, basically, not only have I wasted an entire new jar of cream, I used up at least a week’s worth of shampoo in 2 days!

I was quite lucky to find out, after the fact, that Carol and Jennifer thought Micah looked so hilarious they had to take a picture before cleaning him off.  So, here is the calm, laid-back Micah after being woken up from his slumber and slathered with lotion by his brother.  He is held by the lovely Carol.

This following picture was taken the next day.  And just to let you know, their hair is NOT wet.  It’s made me a believer in the power of Eucerin.  It keeps the moisture in and never washes out!

Manu insisted that Auntie Stephie be in the picture as well.  (We called her to wish her a happy birthday and she’s still on the line).

It is beginning to be a trying time with Imanuel.  Although that was a pretty hilarious experience, I know that now more than ever, I need to beg the Lord to give me wisdom and patience in how to deal with Manu’s mischief.  He just loves to have fun…but sometimes it is at the expense of obedience.  I pray that even now, Imanuel can develop the self-control to follow the rules, even when temptation is lurking at every corner (and from every object!).

Micah Christian is 13 months…and TALKING.
On a more positive note, Micah is successfully signing:
– “more” – It has taken him a while, but he finally does this one properly!
– “please” – Often times, he ends up rubbing his thighs (or anything else) instead of his chest.
– “all done”
– “give”
– “I want that or I die!” – He made this one up himself.  He pounds on his head with both hands and looks at me intensely when he desperately wants some food item that he sees.  I have no idea where this has come from.

And he proudly utters two words:
– “Ma-ma” – which ends up more like, “Ma-ma, Ma-ma, Ma-ma, Ma-ma…”
– “Bah-bah” (bye-bye) – And this goes along with frantic waving of his hands or with a phone to his ear.

Micah is such a (big) bundle of joy.  In his own calm manner, he can brighten the darkest night.  We are thrilled with his progress and we hope and pray he continues to develop his own little personality that is graced with the love of Christ.

Micah:  my calm, serious baby

Manu:  my sweet, mischevious boy

Everyday brings such challenges and joys.  Both drive us to our knees in humility and awe.  Being a parent has been the most ground-breaking experience for me.  It has forced me to understand more of God and who He is and for that I am eternally grateful.  Praise be to God forever and ever!

P.S.  We pray Daddy will come home from Denmark safely tonight!

Micah, we are so proud of you! You have been the joy of our home! We are so thankful that God gave you to us and it is our daily prayer that we will provide for you a little heaven on earth. May the Lord give us wisdom to raise you in the fear of Him and may Imanuel be a faithful big brother and your best buddy throughout eternity. We love you!

Micah’s 1st Birthday!

Micah’s birthday celebration was spent with the Namm Family in Novi, MI on Sunday, November 16.  It was Korean-themed and we really appreciate Micah & Manu’s grandparents for putting on the party for us!  We enjoyed lots of yummy food and desserts.

We also took some pictures today (-his real birthday) but we can’t find our USB so these pics will have to come later.  Thanks to Uncle Jukes & Auntie Aileen, we have pics from the party available.  So, here are some of their pictures from the special day!

* Micah is not in this picture bc things got carried away and he fell off of the rocker and was crying.*

Manu was so excited for his kid brother!  Micah is proudly showing 2 of his 4 teeth.  🙂

The hat was beginning to bother Micah…

But he held still for plenty of pictures.  Congratulations to our special birthday boy!

More pics to come…(once we find our USB cable!)

Micah Wants More, Please

Micah has reached his 10th month of life in the outside world and he learned his first word in sign – MORE.  He actually thinks it means “more please” since I always say “please” at the end of it when showing him.  Anyway, he has “spoken” his first word before being able to crawl.  This must be some sort of Guiness Record or something.  He can scoot around like an inchworm to get what he wants, but he has yet to get himself coordinated enough to get up on all fours and make it to his desired destination.  People have suggested that maybe he’ll go straight to walking, and I’m sure he would be a prime candidate for that.  But I’ve heard from people and read that children who skip the crawling stage end up being deficient in some physical/cognitive skills.  You could talk to an occupational therapist about it or just google it.  So, I’m trying to patiently wait for him to conquer crawling before I introduce him to walking.

Anyway, here’s a picture of Micah saying his first word!

He would like you to have even “more” blessings this Sabbath day!  (And he’d like some more food…please.)
